Assistant Scientific Officer -Marine Fisheries

£12.59 per hour
This posts involves handling and working
with fish samples both at sea and in the lab
- Working at sea on
scientific research and chartered vessels up to 100 days per year.
Trips may be of up to 2 week duration; during these trips, sampling of
biological specimens and assisting in data collection using remote
equipment, including deploying and recovery of equipment at-sea as
required.
- Processing biological
samples within the Marine of FAEB, including fish / shellfish / plankton or
water chemistry analysis. The post holder will also assist in data
recording, data entry, record keeping, assisting in the production of
summary reports and survey results.
- Assist in maintaining
laboratory equipment and instrumentation calibration checks in accordance
with existing ISO9001 accreditation.

Working
effectively and co-operatively as part of a team.

Work will involve field work that will require
manual handling, working unsociable hours (e.g. weekends and early mornings),
standing for long hours, and handling marine organisms.

It
will be a condition of appointment that the post holders must hold an ENG 1
seafarers medical certificate, or be able to pass a seagoing medical ENG 1
examination (paid for by AFBI)

The
post holder will be required to complete ‘Sea survival training’ prior to
commencement of any work at-sea (paid for by Client)

The
post holder(s) will be required to fulfil other duties and responsibilities as
determined by management that fall within the remit of the post. The job
description is not intended to be rigid and inflexible, but should be regarded
as working guidelines for the post.
Specific Experience / Qualifications required1.
’5 GCSE's
including science, maths & english language (Grades A*-C for subjects
specified) or equivalent.
2. At least 12 months experience working in a
scientific field or laboratory environment;
3. Demonstrable experience of working in
challenging environmental conditions (e.g. working at sea)
Enhanced eligibility
- At least 30 days experience of working at sea /
freshwater bodies on a research or commercial vessel;
2. At least 6 months
experience participating in aquatic science
survey work, including, methodologies, preparation, data collection and input
of associated biological data.
