As a trainee Wastewater Assets Technician, you’ll learn new and vital skills, and get all the training and experience you’ll need to succeed in your career.

No two days will ever be the same! You’ll learn to operate and look after all the kit we use to ensure the effective and efficient operations of wastewater assets across Northern Ireland.

The Fast-Track Learning for Operational Wastewater Programme is designed to give you real life, on the job experience and training alongside our industry leading Wastewater team, over a 6 to 12 month period. During the initial training period, we will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to build a successful career within NI Water, and all the workwear, PPE, tools and equipment you need to do the job safely!

You will also enjoy being able to share your experiences and learn from colleagues and assigned personal mentors.

Following successful completion of the Fast-track Learning for Operational Wastewater Programme you will move into the role of a Wastewater Assets Technician, and your salary will be increased. The primary purpose of the Wastewater Assets Technician role is to oversee and ensure the continued optimisation of the treatment process at a number of Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) within a defined geographical area.

Wastewater Assets Technicians are required to participate in an out of hours on-call and overtime rota as well as a requirement to work overtime; including weekends and public and privilege holiday and provide cover for others when the need arises.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

1. One year’s relevant experience (for example, operational or maintenance work within the utility sector; construction industry; manufacturing; farming; water or wastewater experience).

2. Candidates will be required to undertake competency-based tests within a computer-based assessment. These tests will assess candidates’ essential skills, literacy, numeracy and spatial awareness.

All candidates must provide a personal email address on their application form which will be required to undertake the computer-based assessment skills tests.

3. Have the right to live and work in the UK.

4. Have a current valid driving licence which will enable you to fulfil your responsibilities.

5. Have a permanent residence within the 30 miles travelling distance by public road to the location you are applying for, as set out below. This distance is measured by using the RAC Route Planner from full postcode to full postcode via the ‘shortest route’ selection on the website.

This requirement is to enable NI Water to meet its key customer service requirements and deliver effective services to customers, particularly in respect of the need to respond promptly to out of hours emergencies.

What is on Offer

Salary

Entry: £27,433.05 per annum*

*This payment is made up of a consolidated value of £22,732.08 and a non-consolidated value of £4,700.97 per annum.

Upon completion of training: £29,454.36 per annum.*

*This payment is made up of a consolidated value of £24,407.04 and a non-consolidated value of £5,047.32 per annum.

Overtime rates are based on the consolidated value only.

By 23rd May 2025: Conditional offers made to all successful candidates, pending pre-employment checks. All unsuccessful candidates will be notified.
9th to 13th June 2025: Pre-employment Medical Assessment
By 20th June 2025: Final pre-employment checks completed, and final offer documentation issued.
30th June 2025: Start date
