We are currently working with a large Public Sector body in recruiting for an Assistant Scientific Officer based in Newforge Lane.

Main Duties / Purpose of Job / Function of Role

  • The purpose of the post is to assist in scientific field sampling of eels, other fish and laboratory work
  • involving process of live and dead fish to obtain biological information. The post involves field work, on board small vessels on freshwater lakes and rivers.
  • The duties of this Assistant Scientific Officer post are likely to include the following:
  • Handling, and taking scientific measurements of live and dead eel and other freshwater fish in the field, laboratories and at commercial and conservation fishery locations,
  • Working from small boats in large and small freshwater lakes and rivers
  • Maintenance of sampling equipment in field and laboratory
  • Recording of data field and laboratory, entering data to electronic formats
  • Preparing and processing biological samples
  • Driving to and from Fishery and survey sites
  • Other laboratory, office and field duties as allocated by supervisors

Specific Experience / Qualifications required

  • GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level grades A, B or C in English and Maths.
  • At least 6 months experience on some aspect of aquatic science data collection, including demonstrated ability to
  • work in challenging environmental conditions
  • Must have a full driving license that enables them to undertake the responsibilities of the role

Desirable

  • A third level qualification in freshwater, environmental, biological or marine science
  • Experience of handling live and dead fish
  • Experience in data handling and data entry
  • Applicants must be sufficiently fit, able and willing to carry out field work that will require manual handling, working unsociable hours (e.g. weekends and early mornings), working outside, and collecting environmental samples
  • Power boat RYA level 1 or equivalent
  • Experience of Microscopy
  • Training and/or certification in first aid procedures
  • Manual handling certificate/training

Duration of placement - 51 weeks

Hours of work 9-5

£12.59 per hour
