Hays are excited to be working in partnership with a client who is offering a fantastic opportunity for someone with a background in Building Surveying/ Building Control.
They are looking for an individual to join their UK-based company via remote working in NI. You will be part of a small but growing team based in Northern Ireland- currently working from home, but who are seeking to open an NI-based office for hybrid working (1-2 days per week in office) once the team grows.
Our client is one of the largest Registered Building Control Approvers in the UK. Their expert team covers all sectors of construction, from domestic work through to complex multi-million-pound developments throughout England and Wales.
Your new role
The company is seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Building Regulations Plan Checker to join their team. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing architectural and construction plans to ensure they comply with all relevant building regulations and standards. Your expertise in local building codes, safety requirements, and environmental considerations will help ensure that construction projects are safe, functional, and compliant with legal standards.
As the work will be remote for projects based in the UK, the company will provide training to ensure you are up to speed with the UK building regulations.
Key Duties will include:

  • Review Building Plans: Analysing and assessing construction drawings, designs, and specifications to verify compliance with the building regulations
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that plans meet all local, state, and national building codes, including elements such as fire safety, structural integrity, accessibility, energy efficiency, drainage, ventilation etc.
  • Provide Recommendations: Identify non-compliance issues and provide clear actionable feedback
  • Collaboration: Work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and local authorities to resolve compliance issues and clarify regulations
  • Code Interpretation: Provide expert advice and guidance on the interpretation of building codes, standards, and regulations
  • Statutory Consultations: issuing relevant consultations with the local fire brigades and sewage undertakers.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated on changes to building regulations, codes, and construction practices to maintain a high level of expertise.

What you'll need to succeed
The successful individual should have a degree or qualification in Building Surveying / Building control. Being a member of a professional body such as CABE, RICS, MCIOB is preferred but not essential. You are required to have experience in building regulations plan checking, construction, or a similar role. Experience with both residential and commercial building codes is preferred. Applicants should have in-depth knowledge of building regulations, British standards, approved documents / technical booklets.
Other key skills required are:
-Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
-Excellent attention to detail
-Good communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey regulatory requirements and provide guidance.
-Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

What you'll get in return
A full-time position (37.5 hrs / week) working remotely.
The successful candidate will receive an extremely competitive starting salary at approx £50,000pa - based on experience level. The package will include a reasonable holiday period of 25 days plus bank holidays and Xmas period office closure, bonus scheme, healthcare, pension, and other additional perks.
There is also a potential for career progression within this role and trips to the UK to visit the sites of the projects you have been working on.
