There is more to the RCN than you might think. We’re a trade union with a membership of close to half a million nurses, midwives, nursing support workers and students. We support their practice, represent them, lobby on their behalf, and develop them. We exist to make a positive difference – to the working lives of our members and ultimately to standards in patient care. Our employees are drawn from many walks of life – we are nurses, marketers and communicators, administrators, IT professionals, policy and finance experts, lawyers… together we are so much more. We couldn’t do what we do without our people.

We're accredited with Investors in People Gold Standard. Our people are our greatest asset, and we want people who can contribute to our purpose in line with our values.

The Role

We are looking for two full time Paralegals, one is a fixed term contract for 18 months based in Belfast office. The second is a permanent contract based in RCN London HQ.

As a paralegal for our National Public Inquiries team, you’ll use your enthusiasm, positive thinking, and your legal skills to support with the representation of the RCN and its members at various public inquiries. You will also be involved with representation and defence of RCN members in respect of regulatory proceedings in response to charges of alleged professional conduct brought by, and before, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (“NMC”).

To join us you’ll need excellent legal skills with a law degree or equivalent and, ideally, a background in a relevant area such as healthcare regulation or crime. Whatever your background, you'll be efficient, accurate and show a real customer focus in all you do.

What we offer

We expect you to look after our members. And we expect you to be rewarded for it. Our pay is highly competitive with annual leave up to 32 days plus bank holidays. We offer an impressive range of benefits, a broad range of learning development opportunities and an award-winning health and wellbeing programme.

Balancing work and life commitments is important to us as an organisation. We are a diverse organisation and understand everyone has different needs. Many of our employees enjoy flexible working enabling them to deliver results whilst having a good work life balance. We offer generous maternity, adoption, paternity, and shared parental leave packages.

We operate a hybrid working policy with blended office and home working to empower our people to do their best work recognising that, to give our best, we must be able to balance the demands of work and home.
