Kitchen Porter
Job Purpose: To perform a variety of tasks associated with limited food preparation, back of house services and any general support duties required, with due regard to all health and safety and food safety regulations, in order to support the efficient running of a fully functional catering business.
This role involves the operation of cleaning equipment and good physical health and fitness is paramount due to the nature of the physical demands of the job. Kitchen Porters form part of the Catering team in school and report to the Catering Manager.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Keep all designated area (counters, sinks, equipment, walls etc) clean and sanitised throughout the day on a rota basis, as per the cleaning schedule.
- Sweep and mop floors, ensuring spills are cleaned up efficiently to avoid hindering operations.
- Wash cookware, utensils and cutlery etc efficiently to keep them in rotation, paying attention to COSHH guidelines in the safe usage of chemicals and using correct PPE.
- Operating dishwashers and manual cleaning in line with Manual Handling Policies and procedures.
- Unload deliveries and ensure they are put away at a timely manner, in their designated areas and assisting Chef with recording temperatures and dates.
- Movement of stock around the school as required.
- Take out rubbish bins in the kitchen area, and when doing so ensuring all rubbish and recyclables are placed in the correct bins/ skips.
- Help with routine food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling and preparing food items in lines with food safety & allergen guidelines.
- Any other duties as required by the Catering Manager.
The Board of Governors reserves the right to review this post on an annual basis, in consultation with the post holder, to ensure that all the roles and responsibilities comply with the needs of the College.
Essential Criteria:
- A good state of physical wellbeing is required as this is a physical role requiring regular lifting and moving heavy items up to 20kg at a time.
- Effective communication skills to support team working, taking of instruction and engagement with students and staff.
- Effective organisational and planning skills and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
Desirable Criteria:
- Previous experience as kitchen porter.
Hours of Work: 20 hours per week
8.30am – 1.00pm (30-minute unpaid break)
Monday – Friday (Term Time Only)
Salary: NJC Scale 2 (£12.26 per hour)
