Job Description

The purpose of the Earthworks Examiner role in the Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) Structures Department is to ensure earthworks (e.g. embankments, cutting and rock slopes) and their associated drainage assets are examined, ensuring that comprehensive reports are provided to show their condition in accordance with NIR standards and industry best practice and to inform decisions on intervention requirements for the safe passage of trains.

The Earthworks Examiner will be responsible for carrying out annual Earthwork Examinations and any additional examinations required (e.g. Bi-monthly Examinations, adverse weather-related examinations, etc)

The job role will also involve technical input and liaison as a representative for the Structures Department, providing input and guidance on maintenance and capital projects being carried out by the Infrastructure and Project Division and on relevant Third-Party Works schemes.

Essential Criteria

• Qualified to Degree level in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering with a minimum of 3 years post graduate experience OR A HND in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years post diploma experience.
• Proven ability and experience in examination/inspection or design/ construction/maintenance of earthworks assets.
• Strong team working and workload prioritisation experience.
• Understanding and experience of implementing earthwork examination/inspection procedures.
• Computer literate Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Access and Power Point).
• Ability to work at night-time and weekends (one week every six weeks)
• Full current driving licence with access to a car for work purposes
