A National Mechanical and Electrical Contractor based in Northern Ireland is currently seeking Mechanical & Electrical Design Managers of all levels to oversee prestigious projects throughout the UK. With over 50 years of experience, they are renowned for delivering quality projects to a diverse client base locally and across the UK.
Your new role
As a Design Manager, you will play a critical role within this multi-disciplinary and versatile team ensuring that MEP systems are designed, installed and maintained whilst supporting the overall success of construction projects from tender to handover.
- Oversee the design of MEP systems including HVAC, Public Health, fire protection, electrical systems, Fire Alarm & Security Systems, and controls, ensuring cost-effectiveness.
- Managing the MEP design team, including assigning tasks (BSRIA BG6), agreeing program/deliverables, setting deadlines, monitoring progress by the entire design team and providing guidance and mentorship across the departments.
- Collaborate with other consultants/designers such as architects, structural engineers and project management to align MEP design with project goals and schedules.
- Manage the work of external consultants and specialist contractors (CDP) in the MEP design process. Issue EWNs and/or NCNs early to mitigate risks and ensure project success from the outset.
- Evaluate the quality, progress, and direction of design-influencing decisions, and maintain records (BG2, 3 & 4) for future reference and handover to the delivery team.
- Perform site visits to evaluate existing MEP systems and identify any potential design challenges as needed.
- Lead technical workshops or request others to arrange with other designers and third-party stakeholders to ensure design progress is not hindered.
- Oversee the MEP design budget, negotiate contracts with external design agencies and suppliers.
- Ensure timely technical submittals and proposals.
- Ensure drawings, BWIC, submittals, specifications, and change orders/PMIs comply with ERS, design intent, and exemplar specifications. Review Revit (Acad) and Navisworks (3D models) for coordination and buildability.
- Ensure BIM models align with BEP, and involve a BIM team to assist and review.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist Cost Plans: Work with Bid Managers to produce engineering calculations and strategies.
- Identify Risks: Implement Value Engineering while maintaining compliance.
- Monitor RFIs: Develop and monitor RFIs, ensuring smooth handover to delivery team.
- Review Reports: Help develop cost plans, budgets, and quotes.
- Issue Notifications: Provide technical info for EWNs, CEs, Variations.
- Support Projects: Offer technical and engineering support throughout project life.
- Review Claims: Assess claims for additional fees or resources.
- Assist Departments: Provide minor technical assistance on traditional and FM projects.
- Review Quotes: Assess supplier quotes for compliance and completeness.
What you'll need to succeed
Education: Minimum 3rd Level Education.
- Electrical Engineering HNC/HND or NVQ4 Electrical Installation/Technician.
- Mechanical Engineering HNC/HND or NVQ4 Mechanical Technical Trade.
Experience:
- Consideration for Contracts Manager with strong technical knowledge.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience in overseeing and/or project managing a team.
- Understanding of Mechanical and/or Electrical Design development, coordination, and planning.
- Knowledge of Compliance, Codes, and Regulations requirements.
- Familiarity with 3D Modelling and BIM requirements (preferred but not essential).
- Understanding commercial aspects of engineering solutions and budget management.
Professional Membership: Membership of IET / IHEEM / CIBSE (or similar) preferred but not essential.
