Role Overview: Freshwater Consents Monitoring Team Member
The post holder will work within the Water Management Unit (WMU) at the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), contributing to the Division’s goal of achieving good water quality under the European Water Framework Directive. This role focuses on NIEA water quality monitoring programme and involves travel across Northern Ireland.
Key Responsibilities:
Water Quality Monitoring & Sampling:
- Conduct water and effluent sampling in freshwater and marine environments, including industrial sites, wastewater treatment works, and landfills.
- Perform in-field sample analysis using calibrated equipment and reagents.
- Maintain and clean sampling equipment to UKAS accreditation standards.
- Plan, schedule, and organize routine sampling tasks, ensuring monitoring schedules are met.
Fieldwork & Risk Management:
- Conduct fieldwork independently, navigating challenging terrains, industrial sites, and watercourses.
- Provide input for risk assessments, including drafting Sample Station Assessment Plans.
- Assist in pollution investigations and minimise environmental impacts (e.g., Fish Kill sampling, out-of-hours on-call work).
Reporting & Compliance:
- Participate in internal and external audits to maintain UKAS ISO 17025 accreditation.
- Liaise with the NIEA Regulation Team and discharge consent holders regarding sample station access and issues.
- Provide evidence and prepare statements for prosecution cases where required.
Support for NIEA Operations:
- Conduct audits of NIEA vehicles and pollution trailers; liaise with fleet management for maintenance and stock management.
- Assist in enforcement duties, including statutory sampling and note-taking during interviews.
- Support proactive pollution prevention programmes at industrial and other sites.
Health, Safety, and Training:
- Actively contribute to a Health & Safety culture, reviewing risk assessments and adhering to safe working practices.
- Undertake internal and external training to enhance knowledge and skills.
Procurement & Strategic Engagement:
- Obtain cost-effective quotes and manage procurement of equipment.
- Stay updated on departmental strategies, goals, and water quality developments.
Essential Criteria:
- GCSEs (grades A–C) in English, Mathematics, and Double Award Science (or two sciences including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Geography).
- A full manual Category B driving license valid in Northern Ireland.
- Reasonable fitness level (e.g., walking over rough terrain, lifting manhole covers).
Desired Criteria:
- Experience (paid or voluntary) in environmental protection.
- Willingness to complete an Access NI Check (facilitated by The Recruitment Co).
