Mass Spectrometry Specialist
Reporting to the Analytical Services Research and Development Manager, this role will have technical responsibility for method development and new technical projects; in the first two years of appointment the post holder will be responsible for:
- Development of new methods in the analysis for microcystin’s and other contaminants in water by LC-HRAM.
- Commencing development of new methods of analysis for Geosmin/MIB and other Taste and Odour causing compounds by GC-MS/MS.
- Investigatory work on the analysis of PFAS/PFOA compounds in drinking water.
The role will also require the post holder to support technical projects and investigations relating to clean water operations as and when required.

Candidates MUST be able to demonstrate in their application and where necessary at interview that they meet the following, essential criteria:
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- A third level qualification in Chemistry or in a subject where the study of Chemistry is a major component*; plus a minimum of three years’ practical experience working in an analytical chemistry laboratory; plus Chartered Status (Chemist or Scientist), or be prepared to achieve full chartered status with a relevant professional body within two years of taking up position.
- Have a practical working knowledge of water industry chemistry analysis;
- A full understanding of the principles behind the chemistry methods used in the water industry and to assure the quality of data produced for compliance with the requirements of ISO 17025 and DWTS;
- Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements, such as COSHH and risk assessment;
- Access to a form of transport, which will enable fulfilment of responsibilities. This is an operational requirement and is essential to meet business needs;
*‘Major component’ is defined as: At least 50% of the course covers core chemistry modules such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical or analytical chemistry modules.
