GRAFTON’s Beth McMaw gives her advice for employers wishing to appoint a recruitment consultant.
The recruitment industry is renowned for attracting hungry, self-motivated and resilient people into the role of Recruitment Consultant. All of these are absolutely 100% essential competencies for managing a fast paced, highly pressurised desk supplying temporary staff.
What if, as a Hiring Manager in a business you need to recruit for a permanent vacancy?
Naturally you may wish to recruit for the position directly or perhaps you already have but haven’t found the person you are looking for. Perhaps you don’t have the in-house resource, expertise or time to manage a full recruitment process.
With the number of people seeking jobs continuously on the increase, it means the number of applicants applying for each job has at least doubled. This results in more time and expertise being required to ensure the right people are being selected for interview and ultimately for the job. This is another reason why companies are opting to use Recruitment Companies.
Recent research carried out by Grafton Recruitment, suggests that 88% of those choosing to work with a Recruitment Company would prefer to work with a Specialist Permanent Recruitment Consultant if recruiting for a permanent vacancy as opposed to a Generalist Recruiter. Unfortunately, for the recruitment industry the research also indicated that companies don’t want to pay extra for this level of expertise but rather view it as a value added service.
With this in mind, how do you KNOW the Consultant you are dealing with has the expertise to understand your business and the job you are recruiting for? Try the following:
1. Know the recruitment company brand you are dealing with
2. Network to identify what Specialist Recruiters are out there
3. Optimise your knowledge by doing a Google search on the individual Consultant or check them out on LinkedIn
4. When Specialist Recruiters are attempting to establish a relationship with you give them an opportunity to talk to you about their experience and the specialist knowledge they have; that way you can decide who is appropriate to deal with going forward.
For example, if as an employer need you to recruit a Transport Manager, connect with a Specialist Permanent Recruiter who knows the industry and who can relate to your business and ultimately have the credibility to attract, recruit and select top talent on your behalf.
