Trip of a lifetime for engineering students

17th September 2013
Northern Ireland engineering students had the chance to develop professional skills during a recent exchange trip to France – the first of its kind for the college involved.
SERC students from Lisburn and Bangor campuses spent five days as guests of French engineering college, Lycee Brossaud-Blancho, to gain a unique insight into the French way of life through a family living experience.

The visit, organised by SERC through their cultural exchange partnership with the French college, gave students a chance to develop professional skills and French language proficiency and helped increase their understanding and tolerance of other cultures.

During the five days they got the opportunity to work with their fellow French peers on a range of engineering challenges, including fabrication, machining and using fault finding diagnostic software that Airbus had presented to the students.
Engineering student Ben Moore from Bangor said: “This was the trip of a lifetime – getting the opportunity to experience the French way of life in way not available to a casual visitor.â€Â?
Kieran McKenna head of school for engineering said: “Students got the unique opportunity to study in a range of fields including local economy and workplace observation, robotics, report writing and language classes.

“Joint project work with the French students is currently being planned which will allow the students to work together on a range of engineering challenges.â€Â?
He added that the trip was a success and had helped form closer links between SERC and Lycee Brossaud-Blancho.
