More than 100 organisations attended a recent employment law event.
The Employment Law Update Breakfast, hosted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development NI branch in association with nijobfinder.co.uk was attended by over 150 delegates in the private, public and voluntary sectors.
Companies and organisations in attendance included Sport NI, Newtownabbey Borough Council, The Merchant Hotel, Queen’s University, Tughans, PSNI, Axiom Law, Barnardos, Triangle Housing, Diageo, Invest NI and Danske Bank.
The event, held in the Ramada Hotel, Belfast, on March 5, enforced the message that employment law update is an important aspect of any HR practitioner’s role and a key part of personal and professional continuous development.
Speaking at the event, nijobfinder’s advertising manager Mark Reilly welcomed the delegates and presented the unrivalled extent of nijobfinder’s multi-platform reach throughout Northern Ireland and its ability to deliver quality candidates to employers.
The session was facilitated by two employment lawyers from Worthington’s solicitors, a category sponsor for the upcoming CIPD NI Awards. Both lawyers provided an overview of key changes in employment law legislation with reference to two specific areas.
Maxine Orr, partner in employment law with Worthington’s, provided a detailed update on annual leave entitlements through the review of recent case law developments including the Bear Scotland EAT Decision on overtime and looking at how employee entitlement is calculated.
Louise McAloon, also a partner in employment law at Worthington’s, gave delegates an overview of social media policies in the workplace and detailed advice into which circumstances disciplinary action can be taken. She also discussed how the tribunals have been approaching issues arising as a result of employee activity on various social media platforms.
