MET Marks 30 Years of Learning Support

BELFAST Metropolitan College has celebrated 30 years of quality work by its Centre for Supported Learning.

The milestone was marked by its inaugural Supported Learning Showcase in Parliament Buildings, sponsored by the Committee for Employment and Learning.

Marie Therese McGivern, principal and CEO of Belfast Met, said: “Belfast Met aspires to be a college which has a significant impact on the communities we serve, helping to enhance individual lives through learning, development and new experiences.

“For the past 30 years we have delivered innovative, integrated and inclusive Supportive Learning programmes that are tailored to meet individual requirements. Learners are able to fulfil their personal development goals and aspirations while gaining qualifications and new skills.

“We have achieved fan-tastic results and have seen the positive impact these have on individuals and their family, friends and local communities. We are thrilled with the achieve-ments gained by the Centre for Supported Learning and are looking forward to continuing this success.”

Robin Swann MLA, Committee for Employment and Learning chairperson, added: “The Committee for
Employment and Learning is pleased to support Belfast Met’s Centre for Supported Learning. The Supported Learning Showcase is an opportunity to highlight the provision of tailored education and training that the college provides to both school leavers and adults with learning difficulties and disabilities.”

Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry said: “My department’s Disability Employment Service and Careers Service also continues to work with others to help these young people and adults realise their full potential. DEL is finalising a new Employment and Skills Strategy for disabled people across Northern Ireland in close partnership with the local disability sector and other stakeholders. This strategy will set a framework for the  development of services and programmes to further support people with disabilities move into learning and employment.”
