How To … Deal with Work Place Stress

17th September 2013

A MIXTURE OF BALANCE AND ORGANISATION

Do you dread the thought of Monday morning and the workload it brings? Most people at one stage or another will suffer from stress in the workplace but there are practical ways to manage it.

DON’T TRY TO DO TOO MUCH
Often we are our own harshest critics, putting ourselves under undue pressure to be perfect. Anxiety and selfdoubt lead to ineffectiveness. Forget about others’ expectations and focus on working to the best of your ability.

PRIORITISE
Good organisation and time management are crucial to managing stress. Set realistic targets, stay on top of paperwork and keep your work space tidy. Be clear what deadlines are and complete work accordingly. Working to a to-do list will give a sense of accomplishment.

TAKE REGULAR BREAKS
Planned breaks throughout the day will help keep your brain focused. Where possible try to get some fresh air during your working day.

LEARN TO SAY NO
Helping others is one thing but if it infringes on your own work don’t be afraid to say no. If you feel a boss is making unreasonable demands explain your schedule and ask them which tasks should be given priority.

KEEP A HEALTHY WORK/LIFE BALANCE
When stressed or under pressure the temptation is to cut ourselves off from the outside world. Making plans give you something to look forward to and keep you positive. A healthy diet and physical exercise will keep energy levels high and prevent you from getting run down.

TALK ABOUT IT
Letting off steam from timeto- time is necessary but don’t dwell on the negatives. If you think a situation could be improved, schedule a meeting with your boss.
