How To… Consider Your Career Options

17th September 2013

Preparation Key For Latest Graduates…

With many students set to graduate this summer, now is the time to start considering your options. Anne Richardson from the Department for Employment and Learning’s Careers Service gives her top tips…

Be opportunity aware
Research is essential. There are lots of information sources available to help graduates. Your careers adviser will be able to guide you and show you how to do all the research necessary to identify opportunities.

For example, there are programmes funded by DEL available to help unemployed graduates into work such as the Graduate Acceleration Programme (GAP) and INTRO. For more information on both log onto www.nidirect.gov.uk

Remember not every degree leads to one particular job. Try to think about how and where else you can use your degree.

Use different job search options
Sign up to Jobcentreonline and attend Careers Fairs. Start talking to friends, relatives, colleagues and acquaintances as well as your university’s alumni association.

Finally, prepare yourself

Careers advisers can advise you how to update your CV and your online profiles such as Facebook and Linkedin. Bear in mind some recruiters check out candidates via Facebook, so it might be a good idea to make sure it’s appropriate. Be professional by applying early, tailor your CV for the position and stay positive!”
