Networking is getting to know people who can help you further your career. It can be daunting at first but with practice and experience it will become routine.

Be friendly, confident and don’t be nervous about approaching someone to engage them in conversation.

Do your research — check out contacts and companies before you meet with them. This will help you make conver-sation and prepare you for what you’re dealing with.

First impressions count – whether face-to-face, on the phone or by email — so always make an effort.

Talk to as many people as possible — don’t be exclusive.

Listen to what people say — respond naturally then steer the conversation in the direction that you want to take.

Pay attention to detail. Remembering names and facts will put you ahead of the game.

Most people will be flattered if you ask them for advice.
