A job interview is the first chance you have to make an impression with your prospective employer and it’s one you don’t want to mess up. Nerves can often lead to honest mistakes during interviews but it’s also important you don’t let bad habits ruin your chances of landing that dream job.
Don’t fidget
Try to be wary of what you do when you get nervous. Don’t fiddle with your hair, pick your fingers or twiddle your thumbs as your interviewer will pick up on this.
Don’t have your phone on loud or vibrate
You should always turn your phone off for an interview but if you don’t want to do this, be sure to put it on silent and knock off any vibrate setting.
Don’t yawn
It’s important to be well rested to ensure you go into your interview with a clear head ready for anything that comes your way. Yawning in your interview could be misinterpreted as boredom or disinterest and you don’t want that.
Don’t forget your interviewer’s name
Whether you’re told in advance of the interview or you’re introduced to the panel before beginning, it’s important to remember the names of those who are interviewing you.
Don’t forget to ask questions
Don’t be scared to ask questions at an interview, this shows that you are interested in the business and that you are an inquisitive, forward thinking candidate. Make sure you have some questions ready to ask of your interviewer as they will be expecting this.
Don’t dress inappropriately
Back to making a good impression, ensure to dress appropriately for your interview; look smart and well presented.
Don’t talk too much (or too little)
In most interview scenarios, there will be a certain time limit that the interviewer will have in mind.
Don’t forget to make eye contact
Ensure to make eye contact regularly with your interviewer as this will show you are interested, listening and focused.
