Hike in Paid PHDS

17th September 2013

THE number of publicly funded PhD places is set to grow by 60% in Northern Ireland, according to Employment Minister Dr Stephen Farry.
An extra 300 such PhD places in areas of economic relevance will be created over the next 36 months.
This builds on the existing provision of 495 such places. The additional 300 places comprise 150 places secured through the Minister’s successful bid to the Executive’s Jobs and Economy Initiative, and complements the 500 extra undergraduate places for Northern Ireland that were announced recently.
These additional 150 PhD places follow an existing commitment with Northern Ireland’s Higher Education Strategy to increase by 50 each year, producing a further 150 places by 2015/16.
The combination of the 300 additional PhD places introduced through the Jobs and Economy Initiative and the Higher Education Strategy will, by 2015/16, bring to 795 the number of postgraduate awards funded by the Department of Employment and Learning.
