College to Give us A Glimpse of Travel in The Future

25th September 2013

South West College will be giving Northern Ireland a glimpse of the future this week thanks to the Smarter Travel Conference.

The transport event showcasing hi-tech vehicles will be in Enniskillen, as Europe’s experts gather to present how we could be journeying in coming years.

The event, organised by Action Renewables and South West College, looks at new technologies and ideas to make clean and green options more appealing to consumers, governments and employers.

Business owners, fleet managers and the public are invited to come and get to grips with the future of transport.

Electric and hybrid Nissan, Renault and Lexus vehicles will be free to test drive for those who bring their full licence.

The conference, part of the BATTERIE project, is funded by the Atlantic Area EU project, Department of the Environment and Department for Regional Development.

John Harrison, research lecturer at South West College said: “Although great work is already being carried out in Northern Ireland, we recognise that much remains to be done to enhance our reputation as a sustainable travel region.

“This conference will allow delegates to hear about worldleading technologies, it will look at local projects like the Wrightbus Routemaster hybrid bus and our electric vehicle infrastructure as well as how others in Europe are overhauling their transport systems.

“Northern Ireland has the potential to not only be a frontrunner in technical developments, but also in planning and promoting sustainable travel options that can benefit everyone.”

The event is free but places are limited.

Guests must register by emailing terry.waugh@actionrenewables.co.uk
