College Pioneers Online Course To Boost Business

27th February 2014

SOUTH Eastern Regional College (SERC) has become the first college in the UK to develop a new online course in GIS (Geographical Information Systems) — the analysis of customer data, logistics, business trends.

The Introduction to GIS will complement its existing part-time portfolio and has been tailored in response to the ever-changing technological landscape and demands of industry.

This new course, which will help businesses make informed decisions based on real business data, is the first of its kind to be introduced to the UK and is exclusively available at SERC.

The new five-week programme, which will be offered at the college’s Bangor campus, will introduce delegates to the concepts of presenting and analysing information spatially, using GIS software to identify how an organisation’s data can be used in a GIS.

This course will benefit anyone interested in improving the performance of their organisation and for current users of GIS who would like a formal, stand-alone qualification in GIS to complement their work experience.

Ken Webb, SERC principal and chief executive, said: “Geographical Information Systems really do make a difference in all areas of activity and are already helping businesses across the world to enhance performance.

“I would encourage all companies to realise the economic and environmental benefits that GIS has to offer.”

To continue realising the benefits, delegates will be given the chance to further their training in GIS by completing units two and three on campus in order to gain the full Level 3 qualification.

By studying this course online, students can access course material from home, avoiding travel costs to the campus, and allowing the freedom to work through the materials. Over the duration of the course, students will be mentored by a GIS professional.

One company which has realised the benefits of GIS are Belfast-based Kids Play NI. From mapping existing customers, SERC was able to identify the socio-economic make-up of the company’s existing consumer base and use this to provide postcodes as target areas for new customers.

SERC is encouraging SMEs to make informed decisions and create a competitive advantage by availing of GIS training and consultancy. As well as the GIS consultancy service, SERC is the first college in the UK to offer a Level 3 GIS for business course, which will equip delegates with the skills and knowledge needed to maximise the use of GIS in business.
