NORTHERN Ireland employers are already enjoying the dividends of the £31m Youth Employment Scheme, according to Employment Minister Dr Stephen Farry.
Addressing employers at a recent YES information event he said 300 large and SME organisations were already involved in the scheme, including Premier Inn, NIE, Asda, Brown’s Bruncherie, Hastings Hotels, Nacelle Systems, L’Arche and Surf Mountain.
County Down online retailer, homegrownni.com is one of several hundred employers who have benefited by offering work experience to young people.
Its owner Aaron Murray, offered a young unemployed person a four-week work experience opportunity through YES and was so impressed he offered him a full time job through the Enhanced Employer Subsidy strand of YES, which provides financial assistance to employers worth up to £5,750.
Aaron said: “Homegrown has benefited from our involvement in the Youth Employment Scheme. The calibre, enthusiasm and talent of the participants assisted my business during a particular busy period and, this coupled with the knowledge that as an employer, Homegrown was offering our young people the opportunity to get valuable work experience which will assist them in their future careers was rewarding. I would definitely recommend the Youth Employment Scheme to other employers.”
Outlining the scheme for those at the information event Dr Farry said: “The Youth Employment Scheme aims to lift 18 to 24-year-olds out of unemployment and into training and employment. YES is investing £31million into the economy and the scheme delivers reciprocal benefits to both the employer and young person.
“I have been encouraged by the number of employers who have already signed up to YES since September. I am calling all employers not already signed up to YES to do so now and help facilitate and enable the skills development of our next generation. Employers can support this initiative by providing short and long term work experience placements or better still job opportunities. My Department will support via financial and mentoring channels those employers who recruit our talented young people which will not only improve their business performance but grow the local economy.”
