7 Types of co-worker that make us cranky

27th October 2016

Did you know that today is cranky co-worker day? We all have our moments in the workplace but there’s always one or two workers who seem to fit the ‘cranky’ mould more often than others. To celebrate all things cranky in the workplace, here are seven types of worker that can bring out the crankiness in us all.

7 Workers that can make us all a little bit crankier

1. Mr Grumpy

They walk into the office in the morning, don’t say hi or crack a smile, or even worse, make coffee without the obligatory coffee call! Don’t be this person, and if you come across them first thing, give them time to get their coffee fix before approaching. If you are this person, and your grumpy nature is down to your job happiness, then maybe it’s time to consider a change?

2. Drama Queen / King

The type of co-worker who makes a song and dance about everything. From opening an email to the spider or wasp in the office, or even those awkward personal stories that no one wants to hear. We’re all familiar with the drama queens and kings so lend an ear where you can or give them space to let the ‘drama’ sort itself out.

3.The Tell-tale

In some cases, they can be pretty harmless, while in others, there might be an ulterior motive, but the office tell-tale can put anyone in a bad mood at any time of the day. Whether it’s leaving the office without closing the windows and turning off the lights, or forgetting to do your dishes, the tell-tale will not be long in letting people know what it is you’ve done wrong. Don’t let them impact your working mood.

4. The Slacker

Let’s be honest, you probably won’t have to look too far to find someone who fits the bill here. When was the last time you saw this person working hard? They will often be quick to tell you how to do their job while at the same time getting very little done themselves. If hard work was lying in bed, the slacker would lie on the floor. Again, try not to let the slackers annoy you as they always get found out in the end. Just keep your head down and continue to get your work done to the best of your ability.

5. Excited Luncher

Every office has one. As soon as you start eating they can’t wait to shout “ohhhh what’s for lunch today”.  They then feel it’s their duty to tell everyone else what you’re eating for lunch.  And if that’s not bad enough, when it comes to their own lunch, they either spend their break describing how good it is or complaining that their own lunch is terrible as there was nothing in the cupboard.  A sure fire way to make us all cranky during lunchtime.  Don’t let this person be you!

6. The Parent

Whether you want it or not, they are here to comfort you, even when you aren’t feeling bad! They are also quick to diagnose any coughs or sneezes you may have. Get ready to establish boundaries around this office worker.

7. Messy Desker

Don’t touch anything on this person’s desk! No matter how messy it is, they will know if you have moved something. If you do get close enough you might even see what was for lunch last week, never mind yesterday. For those of you who like a clean working space, avoid sitting near a ‘messy desker’ or your whole day could be filled with misery.
