Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) is currently seeking applications to fill to new roles. The latest roles are for Prisoner Custody Officers as Drivers/Escorts. These roles will be based at courts across Northern Ireland and will offer 20 and 35-hour contracts.

Role responsibilities for Prisoner Custody Officers at the Northern Ireland Prison Service 

The main duties of a PCO include

  • The secure supervision of those in custody while on court premises
  • Undertaking designated duties in court within the court proceedings (to include the roles of dock officer, assistant dock officer, etc.)
  • Completion of the necessary documentation in connection with the conveyance of prisoners to and from courts;
  • Secure escort and supervision of prisoners when in transit between establishments and court venues
  • The secure supervision of prisoners while on all external escorts, including hospital and PSNI productions and UK and international transfers
  • Driving appropriate secure vehicles in a safe manner.
  • Adherence to safer custody policies and procedures.
  • Responding to all emergencies in accordance with local contingency plans, operational instructions and section seven of the Security Manual

The salary offering 

PCO (20 Hours) £9,563 – £9,855 per annum

PCO (35 Hours) £16,735 – £16,247 per annum

The provided training

The successful applicants will possess the appropriate knowledge and skills to ensure they can perform their duties safely and efficiently. Each new candidate will complete an initial session at the Prison Service College in Hydebank Wood. Further to this, you will complete training via an extensive programme which will include restraint training. At the end of this training period, a full assessment of the candidate’s skills which the role will be evaluated.

Qualifications required

Applicants should hold 5 GCSEs at a grade C or above by the time of closing.
