YOU have spent hours searching for a job, filling in an application form and you’ve been offered an interview. Great, but the hard work isn’t over.
Darrach Teague, Head of Operations at Cpl Solutions International shares his top 10 tips to ensure you perform to your potential on interview day.
1) RESEARCH
Spend time researching the company and the role you have applied for. You want to ensure the role and company are the right fit for you.
2) BE PREPARED
Think about what sort of questions you might be asked for this role. If you are to give a presentation consider what you want to deliver and whether you want to use electronic props or not.
3) DRESS APPROPRIATELY
Choose your outfit carefully depending on the job and interview formality. Although most interviews require smart/business dress codes it is important to be comfortable.
4) KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING
Take time the night before to double check the venue and time. It is a good idea to check online or listen to the radio on the day of the interview to check there are no serious traffic delays.
5) RELAX
This is easier said than done but it is so important. When you are stressed you don’t perform as well or fulfill your potential.
6) BODY LANGUAGE MATTERS
Acting positively in an interview will not only help you relax but it will break the ice with the interviewers. Try to smile and remember to speak clearly and confidently.
7) TAKE YOUR TIME
Don’t worry if you can’t think of an answer straight away. Take a minute after the question to think about your answer.
8) GIVE FULL ANSWERS
Avoid ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers. A good method for answering interview questions is STAR.
S, talk about the Situation you were in, T, the task in front of you, A, the action you took and R, the result of your action.
9) NEVER LIE
The interviewer may see through your lie or you may get caught when answering a further question.
10) ASK QUESTIONS
If you are really stuck for a question, ask when you can expect to hear from them again.
