FINDING THAT ELUSIVE POST
Julie Connolly from the University of Ulster shares her hints and tips for searching for a graduate job.
USE A MULTI-CHANNEL APPROACH
Approach organisations who are not currently advertising. Build relationships with the right contacts.
MAKE THE INTERNET WORK FOR YOU
Use social media like Twitter and Facebook to your advantage. Register on job boards and set up searches to notify you by email or text about jobs matching your skills.
TAILOR AND TEST YOUR CV
Customise your CV. Read the job advertisement carefully and outline fully how you have the required experience. Show your CV to someone with hiring experience.
PERFECT YOUR INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE
Avoid the common mistakes, prepare well in advance and do your research. Practise with a friend or family member.
GET INTERVIEW FEEDBACK
If you’ve been unsuccessful seek feedback on where you went wrong to improve your chances for next time.
DO INTERNSHIPS
Internships offer a great opportunity to gain experience and explore future opportunities.
STAY POSITIVE
The current job market is fiercely competitive and you may get a few knockbacks. Focus on your achievements, remember what you do well and be persistent.
