WHAT SORT OF LETTER SHOULD YOU WRITE?

There are basically three types of letter relating to a search for employment as Anne Richardson from the Department for Employment and Learning’s careers service explains…

If an advertisement asks that you apply in writing then you send A COVER LETTER with your Curriculum Vitae (CV).

Use the first paragraph to tell the reader why you are writing: “I wish to apply for the position of… as advertised in… on…”

Then use the next couple of paragraphs to promote why you think you’re ideal for the post by making reference to some your CV.

A LETTER REQUESTING AN APPLICATION will have a similar first paragraph as the cover letter.

You are writing because of an advertisement you have seen somewhere.

Make reference to the advertisement and where you have seen it.

Then let them know how you would like the information/ application to be sent.

If you want it by email include your email address, but if you want material sent by post you should provide a prepaid self-addressed envelope.

In A SPECULATIVE LETTER you are attempting to fill a position which has not yet been advertised so the opening paragraph will make reference to why you are writing to the company.

Tell the company what has prompted you to write to them.

Whatever your reason for writing, I would advise you get someone to read it through for you — it’s a general rule that two sets of eyes are better than one and you can’t proof-read your own material.
