Plan For That Big Move To A Better Future
IT could be that you’ve just graduated from university, you’re looking to progress in your present role, or on a new career path. Whatever the situation there are key points to consider.
Get a plan
Decide where you want to end up and how you’re going to get there. Set realistic goals and review them annually. Analyse your skill set and do research to see whether you need more training to succeed in your chosen industry.
Make your ambition known
There are often opportunities for progression with your existing employer and not just in the part of the company you currently work in. Do research and speak to the relevant people, let your employer know you’re loyal to the firm but would be interested in taking on any new challenges or opportunities that become available.
Pick your moment
If you do decide to leave, make sure you have some sort of plan in place. Research the industry you would like to get into and find out what vacancies exist in your area.
Make the move
It may be that the type of job you’re after simply isn’t available locally. Alternatively, it may be the case that your company is moving offices. Showing a willingness to relocate demonstrates real commitment and will mark you out from the crowd.
Take a step back
Sometimes you need to move back to go forward. Think of the bigger picture — earning less now could put you in line for a quicker rise to the top, especially if you move to a company with a reputation for a fast-track path to management.
