AWARD-winning SERC student Philip Harper has engineered his way to a bursary towards his future study.
The construction and the built environment student has received the £1,500 QUEST Technician Scholarship from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
The application and interview process for the award is rigorous and attracts high calibre candidates studying in a further or higher education setting.
The QUEST Technician Scholarship helps students who are getting hands-on technical and practical experience whilst doing a course that could lead to a professional qualification as an Engineering Technician.
The awards are associated with excellence and successful applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for teamwork, leadership skills and ambition. They must also be committed to civil engineering and be willing to promote civil engineering through activities in their region.
Philip’s tutor, Dr Simon Cummings, said: “Philip has worked hard throughout the year and demonstrated an ability to understand the new subjects that he has undertaken as part of the course.
“He has participated fully in the practical activities such as CAD and surveying and has enjoyed the site visits to a number of construction projects around Bangor (eg new Bangor Grammar School and Swimming Pool) and local housing developments. He has been an exemplary student and should do well when he progresses from the course.”
Regional director of ICE Northern Ireland, Wendy Blundell, said: “Philip demonstrated a high level of skill and ambition throughout the application and interview process and we are thrilled to award him this scholarship.
“Our student members are the next generation of civil engineers, and as an institution we understand the importance of encouraging them to become the best they can be. Philip’s Quest Technician Scholarship will put him in good stead to get work experience from leading engineering firms as he progresses through his education.”
