Exchange Programme places still up for Grabs

24th November 2014

THERE is still time to apply for an exchange programme offering students from Northern Ireland technical experience overseas.

IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) sees students from all scientific and technical disciplines undertake work placements across the globe during the summer months.

The placements, available in a wide range of areas in more than 80 member countries, aim to help students develop the skills they will need in their future careers and further enhance their personal and academic development.

Managed by the British Council Northern Ireland the programme is open to degree level science, engineering, technology and applied arts students in the second year of study and above. The majority of traineeships take place in the summer months, although longer periods are also available.

Speaking about the programme, David Alderdice, British Council director in Northern Ireland, said: “International business connections and partnerships are vital for economic success and growth.

“Exchange programmes like IAESTE facilitate these connections by sending out our future business leaders into the inter-national marketplace to gain international experience and build partnerships for success?”

He added: “Employers know that if students have successfully  overcome the challenges brought on by international work experience, they will stand out from the crowd at interview?’

The deadline for applications is November 27, to apply and for more information visit www. britishcouncil.org/iaeste.

Meanwhile, Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry has launched a consultation into a new youth training system for Northern Ireland.

The consultation envisages a new system of youth training which will be recognised nationally and internationally by young people, their parents and guardians, employers and further and higher education providers for its quality, flexibility and transferability.
