Aerospace Is The Future For High Fliers

12th August 2014

BOOSTING workforce skills in STEM related subjects is crucial if Northern Ireland is to boost productivity, increase employment levels and grow the economy, according to Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry.

Speaking at the recent Futures Day at the Farnborough International Airshow, he encouraged local students and apprentices to consider careers in aerospace.

Minister Farry said: “Futures Day is a unique event that focuses on engaging young people and students with the aerospace industry and providing them with a chance to see the career opportunities available within the dynamic sectors of aerospace and defence.

“I’m delighted that 23 of Northern Ireland’s top STEM students and apprentices have had the opportunity today to see the options available in these growing sectors.

“Inspiring our young people to be excited about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects is vital for Northern Ireland’s future success.” He added that a Higher Level Apprenticeship pilot in aeronautical engineering is in development between Belfast Metropolitan College and the industry and spoke of the recently announced Northern Ireland Strategy on Apprenticeships, ‘Securing our Success’ saying it would ensure the economy has the skills needed to grow and compete globally.

Dr Leslie Orr, manager of ADS Northern Ireland, the trade organisation which promotes the aeronautical industry, said: “Our goal is to double the size of the Northern Ireland Aerospace Industry from £1bn to £2bn in the next 10 years. To achieve this we are going to need more people with skills to join this industry. We are delighted that Minister Farry and his department have supported these young people to attend Farnborough Futures Day to see the exciting opportunities that the industry offers.”

Meanwhile, Invest Northern Ireland has launched a call for start-ups to apply for the 2014/15 Propel programme commencing in November.

Now in its fifth year, Propel is an intensive 12-month programme which helps participants fast track their business ideas, develop intensive growth plans and explore global prospects. Applications are now open to early stage export focused businesses with an innovative product or service.

Invest NI’s director of Skills and Strategy Solutions, Niall Casey said:
“The Propel Programme provides a dynamic culture and motivational environment for creative, ambitious, early stage company teams or individuals, who are working on a business idea with international market potential.
