The BT Portrait of a City project is working with community groups across Londonderry to upskill participants in digital media.
The initiative is part of the 2013 City of Culture celebrations and a unique undertaking which aims to tell the stories of the city through the photographs, films and memories of its people.
The goal is to build a digital archive for the future — a time capsule which looks back on the city and which can be viewed the world over.
As part of this landmark project, BT Portrait of a City is working with community groups across the city, with partners Derry Credit Union Ltd and Seagate, to deliver a series of free digital training programmes.
The BT Portrait of a City Team has a portable computer suite and a dedicated team of professional photographers, videographers and editors who are on hand to offer digital training in communities throughout the city and its rural hinterland.
The team are able to store participants’ memories on special portable hard drives courtesy of the project’s delivery partner Seagate.
Carmel O’Connor, head of corporate responsibility for BT in Ireland, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer these workshops and I hope that more people will be inspired to get involved.
“Whether digital technology is new to you or you’re an enthusiast who is keen to learn more, the BT Portrait of a City courses definitely have something to offer,” he added.
Kirsty Osborn, programme manager for BT Portrait of a City said: “BT Portrait of a City offers participants the opportunity to learn new skills while playing a key role in creating and editing the content for the archive.
“This is a journey into the future as well as the past with a new generation to be inspired by the rich history we are uncovering together through the project.”
