A new supermarket store is set to create over 200 new jobs.
Retail giant Tesco has announced plans to open its new store in Newry on June 6.
The range of full and part time vacancies are being recruited for online via the Job Centre website.
Describing the jobs boost as good news for jobseekers in the Newry area the Minister for Employment and Learning, Stephen Farry said:
“I welcome Tesco’s commitment to recruit over 200 new employees in Newry and to work with my Department’s Employment Service to assist with the filling of these vacancies through the JobCentre network. This is a substantial number of jobs being created by an international company and is excellent news for the local economy.”
All new recruits will benefit from Tesco’s bespoke training programme which includes; induction training, health and safety training and customer services training.
Tesco will also be offering unemployed young people in the Newry area the opportunity to avail of work experience with the company through DEL’s Youth Employment Scheme (YES).
YES addresses the issue of youth unemployment by improving the skills of young people and helping them to gain sustainable employment.
The Minister continued:
“One of my Department’s primary aims is to prepare people for work – helping individuals to acquire jobs, including self-employment, helping employers to fill vacancies, and improving the linkages between employment programmes and skills development. An active and vigorous labour market is a key element in growing a dynamic, innovative economy and promoting social inclusion, whilst meeting individuals’ and employers’ aspirations.”
Details of the job and work experience opportunities are available at www.jobcentreonline.com and local Jobs & Benefits offices will also have details on the range of positions available and can offer useful help and advice on the online application process.
Meanwhile, plans to appoint a Skills and Employment Officer in the North West have been met with support.
The Liason Officer will play a crucial role in co-ordinating local and regional activity to ensure maximum benefit from the investment made in skills in Derry.
Offering his support to the role Minister Farry said he believes skills are fundamental to the economic future of the region and believes the appointed individual will help maximise return on investments made for the social future and prosperity of the city.
He said: “The Liaison Officer will help to support the One Plan Skills Directorate as it works to raise skill levels in the city. In addition, he or she will also be working to engage individual employers directly with skills and employment issues, helping them to identify, and avail of, opportunities which can assist them in developing their staff. I look forward to seeing the important contribution this post will make to skills development in the North West.”
