College’s new course for legal eagles

17th September 2013

An international law firm is teaming up with a further education college and a recruitment company in Northern Ireland to launch the province’s first Document Skills Foundation Course.

Alllen & Overy will be working with South Eastern Regional College (SERC) and Grafton Employment Group on the new course which has just enrolled its first 20 trainees.
It is designed to deliver a skilled talent pool that can excel in the production and management of complex documents and gain employment in the legal market with the support of SERC and Grafton Employment Group. Training on the foundation course includes legal text processing, speed keying and digital transcription.
Allen & Overy has committed to interviewing all candidates upon completion of the 24-week training programme with a view to filling resource needs. All students will secure a hands-on placement in the firm’s Belfast document centre, providing support for its international network of 40 offices in 28 countries.
Andrew Brammer, head of Allen & Overy’s support service centre in Belfast said:
“We are investing our resources in and giving trainees access to some of the world’s most advanced systems in this sector. It is not just about creating great Allen & Overy employees, but equipping people with know-how that can benefit the Northern Ireland business community.â€Â?

Thompson Keating, director of corporate and economic development at SERC said:
“This partnership between Allen & Overy, SERC and Grafton Recruitment, shows how the public and private sector can work together for the benefit of the Northern Ireland Economy. SERC is committed to working with businesses and providing training in response to their needs.
“This programme is about providing people with practical, sought-after skills by focusing our joint efforts on solving the skills gaps issues. As part of the recruitment process we took efforts to invite applications from those who are unemployed and are eager to re-enter the workplace. The practical knowledge from this programme will give trainees the edge in the jobs marketplace.â€Â?
