Over 1,500 dedicated Asda employees, including 36 from Northern Ireland, have celebrated a mammoth combined 41,040 years of service.
Workers from Newtownards and Coleraine, Enniskillen and Downpatrick, Dundonald, and Shore Road in Belfast and Omagh joined in the party to mark over 900 years of service between them.
The annual celebration, which is now in its 12th year, recognises employees with 25, 30 and even 40 years of service with the business and was held at Doncaster Racecourse in South Yorkshire.
The Annual Big Anniversary celebration is just one of the ways the supermarket – which was voted Britain’s Favourite at the recent Grocer Gold Awards – recognises the efforts of its long-serving colleagues, who also received an extra week’s holiday and £300 each.
Hayley Tatum, executive people director for Asda, said: “The Big Anniversary is our way of saying thank you for the huge effort that these colleagues put in, year in year out, and with over 40,000 years of service between them, it really was a day to remember.”
Asda recruits its staff for their attitude and trains them for their roles, meaning employees are selected for their enthusiasm and passion for customer service. As a result, Asda believes it benefits from a diverse range of people, from a variety of different backgrounds as well as one of the lowest turnover rates in the sector. According to the company, over 20 per cent of its staff are over the age of 50.
As well as the Big Anniversary celebration, staff also recently benefitted from a bumper £45 million ‘sharesave’ scheme dividend and £26.4 million bonus pot earlier in the year. Employees also receive a discount card, pension and access to 21 flexible working schemes.
