A new scheme to help unemployed – and employed – people find the right career launches in Belfast on July 21 2012.
The pilot scheme, announced by Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry, extends the opening hours of the Careers Resource Centre at Ann Street.
The Minister said: “Careers guidance is often viewed as relevant only to young people. However it is equally valuable to everyone, including those in work, who are considering further education or training or a change in career direction.”
“In order to cope with the future needs of the economy, we must ensure that effective careers services are accessible to everybody.
“By extending our opening hours, careers services will be more accessible to those clients who would otherwise have difficultly attending the office during the normal working week.”
The Careers Service provides free careers information, advice and guidance to clients of all ages and abilities, whether employed or unemployed.
To enable those currently in work to avail of careers services outside their normal working hours, the Careers Resource Centre will provide an additional ‘drop in’ service on Saturday mornings. The new scheme starts tomorrow with the office opening from 10am to 2pm each Saturday. Appointments are not needed.
The Minister continued: “This new initiative forms part of my Department’s commitment to improve client access to the services we provide and builds upon the work currently ongoing within the Careers Service to enhance communication via interactive web services and the use of social media.
“I would again urge anyone, of whatever age, seeking careers information, advice or guidance to contact their local Careers Resource Centre, JobCentre or Jobs & Benefits Office, call 0300 200 7820 or log onto www.nidirect.gov.uk/careers.”
The pilot will initially operate for a six month period, following which an evaluation will be carried out to determine the scheme’s longer term future.
Careers information and advice is also available at nidirect website or by telephone at 0300 200 7820.
