Starting a new job inevitably comes with first day nerves but what happens when you’re working remotely? With many people continuing to work from home this is a situation that is becoming more and more common. There are both advantages and challenges to coming onboard remotely but the following hints and tips should help you make the transition smoothly.
Communication is key
During your first day in the office it would be common to ask questions as you go or even shadow another employee: while this may not be possible in a home working environment it is worth compiling a list and noting down any questions as they occur to you then asking them at an appropriate time. You will also need to establish how your team communicate and the preferred method of contact to use.
Manage expectations
Try to have a clear idea of what is expected from you and what goals you should be trying to hit in your first day, week and month. This is a time of readjustment for many companies so if you’re not sure what you’re doing then ask but be patient.
Reach out
Getting to know colleagues is more difficult when you’re not in the office together but it’s not impossible. Send an introductory email to those who you will be working closely with rather than sitting back and assuming your manager will make the introductions.
Exude positivity
Whether it’s the daily zoom meeting, a one-on-one phone call with your employer or in your emails, make an effort to be upbeat and approachable. Understand that for a variety of reasons team morale may not be at its highest and be appreciative of the fact that you’re not the only one going through changes and learning on the spot.
